After conducting an intense market research program headed by Lee Iaccoca,
a contest to build a nimble, long hooded, short trunked sporty looking compact car
that weighed less than 2500 lbs. and with a price tag of less than $2500, was put
to Ford's styling team. Based on the Falcon platform (unibody), the idea was to appeal
to the ''baby boomer'' generation and to provide an economical alternative to the
land yachts of the older generation. In short, the Mustang not only defined the times,
it echoed the prosperity and desires of the most influential generation in America's
history.
Forty-five years have elapsed since those unexpected '64 1/2 Mustangs rolled
off FoMoCo's assembly line, yet even today people twist their necks just to catch
a glimpse of the nostalgic car that started the ''Ponycar Revolution''. The original
MUSTANG!!!
Why do we love those classic musclecars so much? Maybe its the feeling you
got when you could walk into your ''friendly Ford dealer '' and take your choice,
be it a 200c.i. six cyl coupe or an all out adrenalin pumping
429 S.C.J. or Boss 351 stoplight warrior. It could be appreciation of thetimeless
styling, or perhaps happy memories of that high school graduation when your
dad eclipsed the moment by tossing you the keys to your very own classic '66 Mustang
Coupe, or even taking that special someone to a ''B-grade'' drive-in movie,
the possibilitiesare endless.
Regardless of what your age may be, or your particular reason, millions have
experienced ''Mustang Mania' sometime in their lives, and the feeling is just as
contagious now as it was back in the sixties and seventies when the golden age of
musclecars was the ''Classic Mustang Years ''.
