Remove brake drum, jack under backing plate until control arm is at approximate
ride height, don't lift so far as to raise the body off jackstand. Use a long bar
to raise control arm, if the engine is removed.
Place a spacer between upper arm and frame rail to hold arm in position. Release
jack.

Remove shock absorber as shown. These'' KYB Gas Adjust'' units maintain a lifetime
warranty and help compensate for weakened older coil springs.
Keep all your parts together and out of the way, to reduce searching later.
A ''inside hook'' type spring compressor is a nessessity. Insert spring compressor
but do not compress spring at this time.

Remove cotterpin and upper ball joint nut at spindle. Clean grease from spindle
area.
Smack the spindle at the machined portion, just below the ball joint, with a
healthy hammer.
Alternately a puller or a ''pickle fork'' can be used to separate ball joint
from spindle.
